Signature of a Grant Agreement in support of Critical Infrastructure Development for Internally Displaced Persons and Host Communities Project in the Republic of Yemen

A Grant Agreement was signed today in Kuwait between the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, whereby Kuwait Fund will provide a Grant in the amount of USD 2,126,000 in support of Critical Infrastructure Development for Internally Displaced Persons and Host Communities Project in the Republic of Yemen. This Grant falls within the framework of Kuwait Fund's contributions towards fulfilling the State of Kuwait commitment announced on the sidelines of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly to provide a Grant of USD 20 Million in support of the humanitarian situation in the Republic of Yemen from the resources available in the Fund.
The Grant Agreement was signed on behalf of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees by High Commissioner Mr. Filippo Grandi, and on behalf of Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development by Director General Mr. Marwan A. Th. AlGhanem.
The Project aims to conduct five major infrastructure rehabilitation projects, specifically in Basateen neighborhood located on the outskirt of Aden Governorate, which hosts some 70,000 vulnerable individuals, including Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from neighboring Countries.
The Project includes construction and paving of around 6 kms of roads and internal alleys and the supply and installation of about 400 solar-powered lighting poles in the Basateen Area, and the rehabilitation and maintenance of other critical infrastructure including rainwater drainage facilities, installation of household connections for water and sewage for approximately 1,700 households, and solid waste management.
This is the fifth opportunity for collaboration between the two institutions, and with its signature, Kuwait Fund would have extended approximately USD 19 million to the (UNHCR) as Kuwait Fund had previously signed four Grant Agreements with the institution; the first was signed in 2018 in the amount of USD 10 Million and another in 2020 in the amount of USD 2.6 Million for Improving the Living Conditions of Syrian Refugees in Northern Iraq, a Grant in 2021 in the amount of USD 1.917 Million for Improving Access to Health Services for Syrian Refugees in The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and finally a Grant of USD 2.0 Million in 2021 in Support of Highly Vulnerable Internally Displaced Persons and Host Communities Project in the Republic of Yemen.
