Signing of two Grant Agreements of $21.5 million In Support of UNRWA Health Program for Palestinian Refugees in the Lebanese Republic
Two Grant Agreements were signed today between the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, whereby the Kuwait Fund will provide a Grant in the amount of USD 1.5 million in support of UNRWA Health Program in the Lebanese Republic, which aims to ensure the continuity of health care services for Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon, and another grant of USD 20 million to support the Agency's Program Budget for the years 2021 and 2022. This extraordinary financial support will help the Agency continue to provide vital humanitarian services to Palestine refugees in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
The Grants aim to contribute to supporting the UNRWA Health Program for Palestinian Refugees in the Lebanese Republic by providing health care services and covering hospital treatment expenses for about 2,936 patients in need of medical care, including treatment for cancer, cardiovascular diseases, intensive care, burns and other specialized services.
The Grant Agreements were signed on behalf the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) by Mr. Philippe Lazzarini, Secretary-General of the United Nations and Commissioner-General, and on behalf of Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development by Mr. Marwan A. Th. AlGhanem, Director General of the Fund.
The Grants are within the framework of the pledge of the State of Kuwait during the Third Ministerial Strategic Dialogue on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, which was held on 15 October 2020 in support of its objectives of ensuring the protection of Palestinian Refugees and ensuring the delivery of aid and providing them with basic services.
