The Inauguration of the Undurkhaan Airport Project in Mongolia
In a step that embodies a new phase of continuous partnership between the State of Kuwait and the Republic of Mongolia, the Development and Expansion of the Undurkhaan Airport project in Mongolia was inaugurated today. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Waleed Shamlan Al-Bahar, Acting Director-General of the Kuwait Fund for Development, His Excellency Delger Saikhan, Minister of Road and Transport of Mongolia, Mr. Mutlaq Al-Thuwaimer, Kuwait's Ambassador to Mongolia, alongside several officials from the Mongolian government.
Al-Bahar stated in his opening speech that the project was funded by a grant previously provided by the Government of Kuwait to the Government of Mongolia, under the supervision of the Kuwait Fund. He added that the Fund also signed a grant of KWD 80,000 with the Mongolian government to finance the technical and economic feasibility study for the project. The aim is to transform it into a C4 category international airport, making it a key driver for economic development, in line with Mongolia's sustainable development strategy by 2050. This reflects a shared commitment to enhancing infrastructure and regional development.
He emphasized that the airport expansion project will bring about a qualitative leap in improving connectivity and transportation in Khentii Province and beyond. It will become a vital hub that helps facilitate movement, stimulate trade, and create new economic opportunities for the region, thereby fostering long-term growth and prosperity in the Republic.
It is worth noting that the Kuwait Fund has provided approximately KWD 23.719 million in concessional loans, along with technical assistance valued at KWD 519,000 to the Republic of Mongolia.
Furthermore, the State of Kuwait has provided total grants amounting to USD 12 million allocated to two major projects: the first is the National Burn Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, valued at USD 8.5 million, which was inaugurated in June 2023. The second is the Undurkhaan Airport project, which is considered a shining example of continuous cooperation. Moreover, the project reflects the embodiment of the Kuwait Fund's mission to support transformative projects that leave a sustainable impact.
