Signature of a Grant Agreement for Support of the Renewable Energy for Improved Health Services Project in the Republic of Yemen
Within the framework of the State of Kuwait pledge announced during the Conference to Support the Humanitarian Situation in Yemen, which was held in March 2021, to provide a grant of 20 million US Dollars from the resources available from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, a Grant Agreement was signed on 23 February 2022 between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, whereby the Fund will provide a Grant in the amount of 2.5 Million US Dollars in Support of the Renewable Energy for Improved Health Services Project in the Republic of Yemen.
The Project will seek to mitigate the impact of frequent power outages in a number of health care facilities in the main cities across the country, through the installation of solar micro-grids to generate electric power, thereby enabling the provision of critical health care services continuously even in the event of recurrent power outage experienced frequently from the public power grid. The project will also contribute to supporting the sustainable development goals of providing good health and well-being to the population, providing clean renewable energy, and supporting sustainable cities and local communities.
The Grant Agreement was signed on behalf of the UNPD by the United Nations Assistant Secretary General and Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States Mrs. Khalida Bouzar, and by Mr. Marwan A. Th. AlGhanem, Director General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.
This is the third contribution of its kind between the two institutions in the field of humanitarian support, as the Kuwait Fund had previously concluded with the UNDP a Grant Agreement of 3.6 million US Dollars in support of the Khan Yunis Wastewater Treatment Plant Project in the Gaza Strip, and a Grant Agreement of 2.5 million US Dollars in support of the Solid Waste Management Project for the benefit of Syrian Refugees in Lebanon.
