Signature of a Grant Agreement in Support of Mothers And Their Newborns In Conflict Affected Areas Project In The Republic Of Yemen
Within the framework of the State of Kuwait pledge announced on March 2021 during the High-Level Conference in Support of the Humanitarian Situation in Yemen, to provide a grant of 20 Million US Dollars from the resources available from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, a Grant Agreement was concluded today with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), whereby the Fund will provide a Grant in the amount of 2.0 Million US Dollars in Support of the Mothers and their Newborns in Conflict Affected Areas Project in the Republic of Yemen. The Grant Agreement was signed on behalf of the United Nations Children's Fund by Mr. Eltayeb Adam - Area Representative for the Gulf, and by Director General, Mr. Marwan A. Th. Alghanem on behalf of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.
The Project aims to contribute to reducing maternal and child mortality in the Republic of Yemen due to the high prevalence of malnutrition among mothers and the high rate of teenage pregnancy by improving health care facilities and services for mothers and newborns in five governorates including Al Hudaydah, Saada, Ibb, Aden and Sana'a. The Project will provide basic health care services for mothers and children and train midwives in a group of targeted hospitals in the mentioned governorates. The total cost of the Project is estimated at about 2.0 Million US Dollars, covering the cost of providing health care services in hospitals, health equipment and training, and the implementation period is covers one year commencing of April 2022.
This will be the seventh Grant Agreement between the Kuwait Fund and UNICEF, whereby the Fund had previously signed two agreements with the Organization in 2017 to contribute to alleviating famine in Yemen, South Sudan, Nigeria and Somalia, and to contribute to addressing the Cholera Epidemic in Yemen, and two agreements were signed in 2019 to contribute to Providing Clean Water for the Gaza Strip, and to provide Measles Vaccines for Syrian and Lebanese Children in the Lebanese Republic, and another in 2020 to contribute to Supporting the Preparedness and Response Plan for COVID-19 among the internally displaced areas in the Syrian Arab Republic, and finally a grant for supporting Children with Cancer in the Syrian Arab Republic in 2021 , totalling around 18 Million US Dollars. The year 2019 also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding concerned with coordination and cooperation with the organization in all development and humanitarian fields, in addition to exchanging experiences and forging partnerships.
