Al-Bahar: Kuwait Fund’s commitment to help world nations contributed to Kuwait’s liberation in 1991

Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development's commitment to fulfilling its mission and extending a helping hand to its recipient countries during the time of Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, has contributed significantly to the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution No. (660), which condemned the heinous invasion and demanded restoration of Kuwaiti legitimacy as the resolution was adopted by 14 votes to none, Acting Director-General of Kuwait Fund Mr. Waleed Shamlan Al-Bahar indicated.

Al-Bahar stressed that such an unprecedented global consensus in support of the Kuwaiti cause was due to the Kuwaiti foreign policy's wisdom and expertise backed by economic and development shoulders, including Kuwait Fund, whose global development efforts and projects that covered vast parts of the world contributed to bringing Kuwait's issue to the attention of regional and international forums, and helped in mobilizing global support for Kuwait at UNSC and during the meeting of foreign ministers of non-aligned countries, held on the sidelines of the UN General Session in October 1990.

Despite the difficult circumstances back then, Kuwait Fund was able to continue with its development operations based upon the directives of His Highness the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who insisted that the Fund continue its development activities during the crisis, he noted.

The majority of countries benefitting from Kuwait Fund have approached the Fund at its temporary headquarters in the British capital, London, during the flagrant invasion crisis, Al-Bahar said, adding they have expressed their willingness to repay their loans in full if Kuwait is in urgent need of any funds, as they desire to help the Kuwaiti government at the time of distress in response to Kuwait's support during many difficult times they experienced in the past. Some of those countries offered their lands, and some took more ferocious positions against the Iraqi regime in UN sessions, he noted.

Al-Bahar also said that Kuwait was able to reap the rewards of its aid to developing nations through the Fund, spanning over 30 years, when the international community rose to defend it.
He also indicated that Kuwait Fund succeeded, through its efforts, in becoming a link between Kuwait and the vast majority of countries around the world, reaping their loyalty and support to help ensure the protection of the country from crises and dangers, and creating a more promising future, pointing out the importance of Kuwait's foreign policy as it has contributed significantly to convincing most countries of the world stand by the Kuwaiti cause and advocate for it.

Al-Bahar added that the main objective of establishing Kuwait Fund was to consolidate the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Kuwait and the rest of the world.
