In the presence of H.E. Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the representative of H.H. the Amir, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development showcased its environmentally funded projects in the realm of environmental conservation at the State of Kuwait’s pavilion during the ongoing United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28) held in Expo City Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The Kuwait Fund stated that Sheikh Salem Al-Sabah visited the Kuwaiti pavilion during the conference, which commenced its activities on November 30 and will continue until December 12. This conference brings together a multitude of representatives from various agencies and institutions concerned with environmental, developmental, climate, and sustainability matters.
The Kuwait Fund expressed its commitment, stating that its participation in this global event aimed to spotlight its developmental role by supporting projects dedicated to environmental preservation, emission reduction, and sustainable development in developing nations.
The statement added that the Fund focuses on the environmental sector as a key priority, with the 28th session of the conference covering various topics. These include achieving global financing goals to aid developing countries in addressing climate change, expediting equitable energy transitions, and narrowing substantial emission gaps.
Acting Director General of the Kuwait Fund, Mr. Waleed Shamlan AlBahar, underscored the Fund’s dedication to promoting projects that conserve natural resources, environmental integrity, and renewable energy sources. He emphasized their significant contribution to achieving sustainable development goals, marking progress towards the Millennium Goals.
AlBahar added that the Kuwait Fund, in cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), financed the "Adaptation and Resilience to Combat Transboundary Sand and Dust Storms" project across the borders of Kuwait and Iraq last year, aimed at minimizing dust storm occurrences.
The cost of this massive environmental project amounted to about 12.9 million US dollars, promising a safer environment and positive health and economic outcomes for both current and future generations.
Furthermore, Al-Bahar highlighted the Fund's encouragement and support for clean energy projects with minimal environmental impact. Initiatives such as new thermal electricity generation plants and the enhancement of existing ones play a significant role in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
