The Kuwait Fund for Development Celebrates its 62nd Anniversary, Continuing its Developmental Journey

The Kuwait Fund for Development announced in a statement on the occasion of its 62nd anniversary that it has contributed to financing projects in approximately 105 countries around the world over the past six decades, including 16 Arab countries, 42 African countries, 19 countries in East and South Asia and the Pacific, 17 countries in Central Asia and Europe, and 13 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. This has been achieved through 1,012 concessional loans provided to the governments of these countries, amounting to approximately 6.8 billion Kuwaiti Dinars.

The Acting Director General of the Kuwait Fund, Mr. Waleed Shamlan Al-Bahar, stated today that the Fund has been, since its establishment as the first development institution in the Middle East, a unique entity that has contributed to placing Kuwait on the map of countries serving the global effort towards development, with its work based on a clear strategy that includes financing developmental projects that contribute to sustainable development goals.

In addition to its developmental efforts, the Kuwait Fund has been actively involved in major international crises, with a particular emphasis on refugee issues in Arab countries. The Syrian refugee crisis, in particular, has garnered significant attention from the Fund, reflecting its recognition of the severe humanitarian tragedy impacting the Syrian people. Furthermore, the Fund has played a pivotal role in the reconstruction efforts in Lebanon, Palestine, and Iraq. Additionally, the Fund cooperated with the Kuwait Red Crescent Society to support “Rohingya” refugees in the Republic of Bangladesh.

The Kuwait Fund has made numerous contributions to support development efforts within Kuwait, without compromising its primary mission. One of its most significant contributions is its support for the housing issue. Since 2003, the Fund has been allocating up to 25% of its annual net profits to the Public Authority for Housing Welfare. Additionally, it has supported the Kuwait Credit Bank with a sum reaching 800 million Kuwaiti Dinars, bringing the total support for the housing issue in Kuwait to approximately 1.3 billion Kuwaiti Dinars to help meet housing demands.

Within the same framework, the Kuwait Fund launched in 2004 a training program for newly graduated Kuwaiti engineers and architects, aimed at equipping the national workforce with the necessary expertise to enhance the local market with skilled professionals. Additionally, the 'Be Among High-Achievers' initiative was launched in 2010 to motivate high school students towards success and excellence.

Furthermore, the Fund has contributed to the financing of the Al-Wafra Power Station project in collaboration with the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority, with a value of 70 million Kuwaiti Dinars. This project aims to strengthen the national electrical network and ensure the sustainability of electrical energy at all times and under all circumstances.

It is noteworthy that the Kuwait Fund self-finances its operations from its own profits, generated from loan interests and global investments, without imposing a burden on the state's general budget.
