In presence of Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius Mr. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development took part in the inauguration of Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital project in Mauritius.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Health and Wellness Minister Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal and a number of ministers and officials in the Republic, in addition to Kuwait Fund delegation, headed by Acting Deputy Director-General Ms. Eman Al-Abdulrazzaq and included Mr. Ayad Al-Gharaballi, Operations Supervisor for Central, East and South African Countries.
The project, which Kuwait Fund contributed to financing, aims to support and upgrade the health sector in Mauritius through accommodating the increased demand for modern health care services and enhance their quality, and secure the services provided by hospitals and health care in Flacq district.
Minister Jagutpal said, in an exclusive statement, that his country’s government was granted a loan by Kuwait Fund and the Saudi Fund in 2018 that contributed to building a 500 bedded hospital backed with advanced technology and infrastructure, noting that the hospital is going to cater its services for the population of around 200,000.
He also said that the hospital “was built on a big area of land and is going to provide services from advanced cardiology care, high-end equipment, state-of-the-art facilities, and about 10 hi-tech operation theatres,” expressing profound gratitude to Kuwait Fund “for its contribution in achieving this project for the Mauritian government and people”.
For her part, Ms. Eman Al-Abdulrazzaq mentioned that “the project has been co-financed by Kuwait Fund and the Saudi Fund for a total value of about USD 127 million,” adding that “Kuwait Fund’s contribution to this project amounts to around USD 24 million”.
She added that the main objective of the project is to enhance the health sector in the Republic of Mauritius, noting that the cooperation relationship between Kuwait Fund and Mauritius dates back to 1980, during which the Fund provided seven concessional loans worth USD 74 million.
For his part, the Hospital’s Director said the new hospital accommodates about 550 beds compared to the old hospital in Flacq district, which had only 350 beds, adding that “we are currently in the phase of moving from the old hospital to this new one”.
“This phase is taking some time, but we are making sure that all the patients are transferred safely to the new hospital. The transfer procedure is currently ongoing as emergency rooms and the maternal ICUs have been equipped and currently operating,” said the director.
