KFAED to fund USD 1.3 mil project for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh

Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) is to extend USD 1.3 million-worth grant in order to implement the Adaptation Capacity project for the Rohingya refugees’ camps in Cox's Bazar region of Bangladesh, Kuwait Fund announced Tuesday.

The project is part of a cooperation agreement signed last Monday between Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), said KFAED, adding it will contribute to financing the project as part of current cooperation and joint initiatives with KRCS in the humanitarian aid field.

The project aims to improve living conditions and wellbeing of Rohingya refugees in camp regions through the construction of new shelters that could house some 1,500 families, and supply them with essential needs and necessities, it said, noting that some 6,000 people are to benefit from the project.

The grant is part of activating the KFAED-KRCS memorandum of understanding, which tends to facilitate means of mutual cooperation in humanitarian aid and relief effort fields, the Fund said, pointing out that this grant is also part of its contributions to fulfill the State of Kuwait’s commitment to relieving the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

In that same context, the Fund mentioned that its Board of Directors had issued a decision, dated 06/11/2017, to allocate a USD 1.0 million grant, and another decision, dated 10/01/2018, to allocate an additional grant worth USD 4.0 million, and a decision, dated 27/10/2020, to allocate an additional grant worth USD 1.0 million, bringing the total amount to USD 6.0 million.
