Under the auspices of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) His Excellency Abdullah Al-Yahya, the Kuwait Fund took part in the United Nations Day festivity, hosted by the UN mission to Kuwait.
The event, tagged “Sustaining Peace and Security”, coincides with the 61st anniversary of Kuwait’s UN membership. It reflected the distinctive strategic partnership and permanent cooperation between Kuwait and UN, particularly in boosting international development and cooperation to secure and sustain peace and security, and meet the international community’s priorities.
Al-Yahya said, in his speech at the festivity, that Kuwait firmly believes in the importance of joint international action, adding it was keen, since joining the UN in 1963, on providing support and assistance to all activities and efforts exerted and adopted by UN agencies, the most notable contributions were within the in the development and humanitarian fields, aimed at achieving prosperity for people of the world and alleviating the suffering of those affected by humanitarian crises.
For her part, UN Resident Coordinator to Kuwait Ghada Hatim El-Tahir expressed pride in the close UN-Kuwait cooperation to attain the Sustainable Development Goals, noting that such a bilateral collaboration would be a main pillar to achieve the bases of sustainable peace.
Kuwait has extended financial support and assistance for development projects and humanitarian action to crises-hit people over a long period of time, El-Tahir said, adding that the 2024 Global Peace Index ranked Kuwait 1st among the Middle East and North Africa nations and 25th on the world level, which signals Kuwait's leading role in peace building. She extended her utmost congratulations to the leadership and people of Kuwait for such an accomplishment.
During the event, a short film was played shedding light on the Kuwait Fund’s efforts in alleviating the suffering of refugees and displaced ones from various parts of the world.
The film also included the Fund’s efforts in providing response plans for those refugees through backing their host communities in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey.
Furthermore, the film showed the Fund’s contributions in protecting the poorest countries from disasters, famines, crises, diseases, and nescience, in addition to securing means for decent living.
It is worth mentioning that the Kuwait Fund has signed several agreements during the current month of October, among whom recently a deal to contribute to backing a project that aims to improve the living standards of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
The project also seeks to elevate the level of security and public health for the refugees, and provide basic materials for renovating their residences in Cox’s Bazar camps.
