Signature of a Grant Agreement of USD 1.5 Million In Support of Sustaining Vital Primary Healthcare Services Project in the Republic of Yemen

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) signed on 02/12/2024 a Grant Agreement with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), whereby the Fund will provide a grant amounting to USD 1.5 Million in Support of Sustaining Vital Primary Healthcare Services Project in the Republic of Yemen.

The Grant Agreement was signed on behalf of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development by Mr. Waleed Sh. Al-Bahar, Acting Director General, and on behalf of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) by Mr. Eltayeb Adam, UNICEF's Representative to the Gulf Area.

The Project aims to address the health challenges resulting from the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crises in Yemen, by providing operational support to primary health care centers including maintenance, administrative expenses, and facilities to meet their daily needs, and ensure the provision of minimum human resource requirements for their operation. These centers provide basic health services including: maternal, infant and child health, nutrition, non-communicable diseases, mental health, disease prevention, social and behavioral change, and medical waste management.

The Project comes within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding concluded between the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on 03 September 2024, to provide joint emergency humanitarian assistance to the population affected by the conflict in the Republic of Yemen, under which the United Kingdom and the State of Kuwait will provide, through the Kuwait Fund, a humanitarian grant of US$ 3.0 million, US$ 1.5 million each, to finance the project, which is expected to directly benefit approximately 1,450,000 people in Yemen.

This Grant is the eighth contribution of its kind between the two institutions in the field of humanitarian support. Since the year 2017, Kuwait Fund has extended approximately USD 22.0 million to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to support eight projects, the latest of which was signed on 21/04/2022, to finance the “Supporting Mothers and Their Newborns in Conflict Affected Areas" Project in the Republic of Yemen with a Grant amounting to USD 2.0 million.
