Male and female student delegations, currently taking part in “Be Among High-Achievers” program, visited several historical and cultural landmarks and a number of Kuwait Fund-financed project sites in the Togolese Republic and the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of the 14th edition trip organized by Kuwait Fund for high school students, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.
During a discovery tour in the Togolese capital Lome, the male students’ delegation visited Lome Palace, one of Togo’s most renowned historical and cultural landmarks. The students also visited the Independence Monument, built as a tribute to the country’s independence following years of anti-colonial struggles.
On the second day, the students paid a visit to the cocoa and coffee plantations, and the local market in the town of Kpalime. Afterwards, they headed to see the Wome Waterfalls, renowned for its fresh water. They also visited the Kpalime Craft Center, where they got acquainted with local handcraft products such as sculptures and traditional textiles.
Mahdi Jaragh, student, said “the cocoa and coffee plantations tour was so fabulous. It was neat to know the traditional method of making these significant products, and made us appreciate the efforts exerted by the farmers”.
The students also visited a site of one of the projects supervised by the National Fund for Inclusive Finance (FNFI) in Togo, which Kuwait Fund contributed to finance, where they learned about the project’s working mechanism, as well as its role in backing microentrepreneurs, boosting entrepreneurship and economic development in local communities, in addition to seeing practical examples of the success achieved by these development-support projects.
Hussain Heydar, student, noted in this vein that “visiting the project was tremendously an inspiring experience as we saw how Kuwait Fund contributes to support FNFI in Togo, which help and empower microentrepreneurs to upgrade their businesses and achieve economic stability”.
On the third day, the students visited the Fishing Village in the town of Aneho, where they learned about the significance of fishing as a part of local culture and economy. Afterwards, they headed to visit the Sacred Forest, one of the prominent religious and historic hubs in Togo.
Moreover, the delegation visited the Slave House in the city of Agbodrafo, an influential historical site connected to the slave trade in West Africa region. This visit left a profound impression on the students’ understanding of this part of human being history and its impact on the world.
On the other hand, the female student's delegation visited the biggest shopping mall in the city of Sarajevo, in addition to the academy of culinary arts, in which they participated in a cooking workshop that included preparing some of the most traditional dishes in Bosnia.
Munira Al-Nasar, student, expressed joy of “shopping around famous commercial stores in the biggest shopping mall in Sarajevo and then joining a Bosnian cooking course, in which we learned how to prepare traditional Bosnian food. It was more than a wonderful experience”.
On the second day, the delegation visited the Musala Bridge project site, which Kuwait Fund contributed to build in 2000, that extends over Neretva River and regarded as an eminent landmark reflecting the fruitful cooperation between the State of Kuwait and the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It connects parts of the city and contributes to improving traffic and residents’ life.
The delegation also visited Kuwait Square, which include a monument depicting the solid relationship between the State of Kuwait and the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and reflecting the spirit of cooperation between the two countries. The monument was built in 2001 as an appreciation of the State of Kuwait’s efforts in financing development projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
On her part, Dr. Senada Demirovic Habibija, Senior Adviser within Urban Planning Department of the City of Mostar, noted that “this project has had a great positive impact on Mostar’s residents, and still does to this day”, assuring that “the efforts exerted by Kuwait Fund and other financers pose as a great contribution to the reconstruction of the city, and boosts coexistence among its residents.
