Dimensions of Sustainable Development

Sustainable development focuses on four dimensions:

1- Economic sustainability
Economic sustainability aims to conserve resources. While social sustainability focuses on improving social equality, economic sustainability aims to raise the standard of living. Maintaining high and stable levels of economic growth is one of the main goals of sustainable development. Abandoning economic growth is not an option, and sustainable development is more than just economic growth. The quality of growth and ensuring the continued availability of resources that guarantee economic growth for future generations is also as important.

2- Social sustainability
The concept of social sustainability lies in the preservation of social capital through investment and the creation of services that form the framework of society. The concept accommodates a larger generalizable view of the world in terms of societies, cultures, and globalization, by recognizing that what is done can affect others and the world. Social sustainability focuses on maintaining and improving social quality with concepts such as cohesion, reciprocity, honesty, and the importance of relationships between people. It can be encouraged and supported by laws, information, and shared ideas about equality and rights. Social sustainability includes the idea of sustainable development as defined by the United Nations SDGs. The principle of sustainable development deals with social and economic improvement that protects the environment and supports equality. Therefore, there is a close relationship between the economy, the society, and the environmental system.

3- Environmental sustainability
Environmental sustainability aims to improve human well-being by protecting natural capital such as land, air, water, minerals, etc. An initiative and a program is considered environmentally sustainable when it ensures that the needs of the population are met without the risk of compromising the needs of future generations. Environmental sustainability focuses on achieving positive economic results without causing any harm, in the short or long term, to the environment.

4- Human sustainability
If we accept that sustainability in the broad sense is the programs, initiatives, and procedures that aim at the optimal use of resources and their preservation for future generations, then human sustainability aims at preserving and improving human capital in society. Investments in health and education systems, access to services, nutrition, knowledge and skills, are all programs that serve human sustainability. Human sustainability includes the development of human skills and capabilities to fill and sustain jobs and to enhance the welfare of societies. Due to the fact that natural resources and available space are limited, there is a need to strike a balance between continued growth and improvements in the health and economic well-being of all.
