KFAED partakes in opening ceremony of potable water extension project in Malawi : Project serves some 39,000 people, expected to increase to 93,000 by 2036


 

 


 

Under the patronage and presence of His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) participated in the opening ceremony of the Extension of Mangochi Potable Water Supply project in the Mangochi district of Malawi on Saturday, October 12, 2023.

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Abdullah Al-Mesaibih, Director of Operations of Kuwait Fund and an accompanying delegation from the Fund. From the Republic of Malawi, the ceremony was attended by Her Excellency Mrs. Joyce Banda, former President of the Republic of Malawi, in addition to the Minister of Water and Sanitation, water sector officials, and representatives of civil society in the Mangochi district.

His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, expressed his profound gratitude and appreciation to Kuwait Fund for its development contributions over the past years since 1995, which have resulted in seven development projects that contributed to the advancement of his country’s development. He pointed out the significance of continued cooperation in the future and the pursuit of development.

For his part, Mr. Abdullah Al- Mesaibih, expressed his pleasure to participate in the opening of the project, which in turn achieves the 6th goal (clean water and sanitation), 8th goal (decent work and economic growth), and 17th goal (partnerships for the goals) of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations.

Kuwait Fund contributed 79% of the project through a KWD 5 million-loan extended in 2019. The project serves approximately 39,000 people and is expected to increase to approximately 93,000 by 2036, by meeting the demand for clean drinking water and protecting public health, through the construction of a water treatment plant and water transmission and distribution networks. In addition, it will increase commercial opportunities, leading to improved socio-economic conditions and increased employment opportunities.
