Kuwait Fund Participates in the Inauguration of Mangochi Potable Water Supply Project in Malawi
The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development proudly participated in the inauguration of the Mangochi Potable Water Supply Extension project, held under the auspices of His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, on Saturday, October 12, 2023. The ceremony, which took place in the Mangochi district, was attended by Mr. Abdullah Al-Mesaibih, Director of Operations at the Kuwait Fund, accompanied by a delegation from the Fund. Distinguished attendees from the Republic of Malawi included Her Excellency Mrs. Joyce Banda, former President, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, officials from the water sector, and civil society representatives from the Mangochi district.
President Chakwera conveyed his profound gratitude to Kuwait Fund for its significant developmental contributions in Malawi since 1995, which have culminated in seven impactful development projects. He highlighted the critical importance of sustained collaboration and commitment to future development. For his part, Mr. Abdullah Al-Mesaibih expressed his delight in participating in the project’s inauguration, which supports the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, specifically the 6th goal (clean water and sanitation), 8th goal (decent work and economic growth), and the17th goal (partnerships for the goals).
The Kuwait Fund has played a substantial role in the project, providing 79% of the funding through a loan of 5 million Kuwaiti dinars disbursed in 2019. The project currently benefits approximately 39,000 individuals, with projections to serve around 93,000 by 2036. The project meets the growing demand for clean drinking water and enhances public health by its water treatment facility and comprehensive water transmission and distribution networks. Additionally, the project is expected to expand commercial activities, thereby improving socio-economic conditions and creating more employment opportunities.
