The Kuwait Fund’s Role in Advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The State of Kuwait, since gaining independence in 1961, has been a reliable advocate for international economic development, driven by a belief in the essential nature of cooperation, solidarity, and human interconnectedness. This commitment was actualized with the creation of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development in the same year, marking it as the Middle East’s inaugural development institution dedicated to aiding Arab and other developing nations in attaining economic and social progress for their populations.

The Kuwait Fund’s activities encompass the provision of concessional loans, grants, and technical assistance to Arab and other developing countries. These concessional loans are allocated to development projects across a spectrum of economic sectors, including transportation, communication, agriculture, water and sanitation, energy, development banks, and social infrastructure, which encompasses health and education.

Furthermore, the Fund offers grants and technical assistance to finance the costs associated with preparing feasibility studies for development projects in these beneficiary countries and for training their national workforce. In addition, the Fund, representing the State of Kuwait, contributes to supporting the resources of several regional and international development institutions, such as the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, the African Development Fund, the African Development Bank, the Arab Investment & Export Credit Guarantee Corporation, the International Development Association, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and the Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND).
